Portugal Prints pop up exhibition at the Photographers Gallery

On Thursday 28th of January Portugal Print’s staff and service users made their way to the prestigious Photographers' Gallery, just off Oxford Street to join the Westminster Culture Network Group for a volunteering event organised by Westminster City Councils' Cultural Partnerships office.

Over forty professionals were present and speakers described various aspects of volunteering within their organisations. Portugal Print’s Jill Bryan spoke about how well volunteers fit in to the work we do at Portugal Prints and Sam Tallant presented WWMind’s Support for Volunteering service.

On display was a selection of art and photography from Portugal Prints, plus a slideshow that ran throughout the afternoon, showcasing the project. It was a great opportunity for the wider Westminster community to see PP artists’ output.

The afternoon concluded with group workshops where we were invited to come up with our top tips for a successful volunteering programme.

The things we came up with were:

·set clear expectations ·provide training ·ensure there is a clear structure with robust policies ·establish an exchange relationship ·flexibility on both sides ·one point of contact ·mentor ·pay travel expenses ·review ·signposting.

Portugal Prints is living testimony to the power of volunteering both for the organisation, the service user and the volunteer.
