Mother Tongue Counselling

"Winner of the Westminster Community Award for the Best Neighbourhood Project 2017"

For Arabic and Farsi (Persian) speaking communities in Kensington & Chelsea, Queens Park and Paddington

About the Service

This service is an integral part of the wider Community Living Well Service, which is delivered by the Talking Therapies & Wellbeing Service at Wandsworth & Westminster Mind.

It's personalised to suit the linguistic and cultural needs of Iranian, Moroccan and other Arabic speaking communities by providing equitable experience of talking therapy, learning through workshops, and engagement in groups to enhance their wellbeing.

It aims to integrate adults who speak Arabic and Farsi (Persian) into primary care mental health services, by providing one-to-one counselling and group sessions around mental health & emotional wellbeing in their native languages.

We accept referrals from health professionals. People are also able to self-refer*.

The leading priority of this service is to ensure that people’s access to talking therapies is not stalled by their ethnicity, culture or faith, and to normalise the concept of mental health problems so that the communities can openly talk about it and not ignore it.

What we offer

  • One-to-one IAPT compliant counselling- Free and short-term (6-12 sessions) talking therapy support directly in Farsi and Arabic languages, for management of mild to moderate symptoms of common mental health difficulties such as stress, anxiety or depression.
  • Well-being program: One-off workshops and self-help groups (with interpretation in Arabic & Farsi) on topics related to mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Translated literature on common mental health issues, self-help techniques and information about other local services in the community, in order to bridge the communication gap, raise awareness, reduce the stigma, and sustain recovery as part of integrated care.
  • Confidentiality- We respect the privacy of the service users. Any information discussed in the sessions will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed to a third party without the consent, or under exceptional circumstances, such as risk or harm to self or others.
  • Accessibility- The one-to-one service is offered at a variety of integrated-care venues in the community, including St Charles Centre for Health & Wellbeing in North Kensington. The groups & workshops can be organised at any community location where people already assemble for other activities, depending on the convenience of the participants.
